TIRUPATI: A branch of fincare small finance bank at Srikalahasti town in Tirupati district mandal was robbed by unknown miscreants, who decamped with approximately Rs 80 lakh worth gold and Rs 5 lakh cash after holding a bank employee at knifepoint late on Thursday night.
According to police, when the robbers, armed with knives, entered the bank around 10.40pm on Thursday, there were only two bank employees, who were working late to close pending accounts.
The robbers, who spoke in English – as claimed by a bank employee, threatened the bank clerk to open the locker room.
“Me and another employee were working late to close the pending accounts. At around 10.40 pm, my co-worker went upstairs and I was alone in the bank when three masked men entered it and threatened to open the locker. When I refused to do it, they tied me and closed my mouth with my chunni, and grabbed the locker room keys. Then, they looted the cash and gold ornaments in the lockers”, said Ms. Sravanthi, bank clerk.
On being informed, DSP Viswanath and a team of police personnel rushed to the bank at around 1 pm and started investigation. The police alerted all the check posts at the entry/exit points of the district and inter-state border check posts as well. All lodges and hotels in Srikalahasti and Tirupati are being checked.
DSP Viswanath said the police registered a case and further investigation is underway. “The amount of theft is yet to be ascertained by the banker. We have pressed the clues teams into service, and we are also examining the CCTV footage in the vicinity, and at the entry/exit points of the town to identify the accused. Teams have been deployed to carry out searches across the district”, the DSP informed.
Police sources said the identity of the robbers could not be established as they had taken away the CCTV’s hard disk in the bank, and they were also wearing masks.
